Window Framing
Correct rough openings that ensure your windows fit square, seal tight, and stay that way for the life of the home.
A window rough opening that's out of square by a quarter inch makes installation difficult. Out by a half inch and the window may never seal properly. Get the rough opening right in the framing phase and every window sets cleanly, seals tight, and locks smooth.
Artisan Framing frames window openings by the book — correct rough opening dimensions per manufacturer specs, properly sized headers for the span and load, and solid framing that doesn't shift after the insulation crews and drywallers come through.
What Window Framing Includes
- Rough opening sizing based on manufacturer specifications and window schedule
- Header selection and installation — sized correctly for load and span
- King studs, jack studs (trimmers), and cripple studs
- Rough sill installation at correct elevation
- Structural blocking and shear transfer where required by plans
- Bay window and specialty window structural support framing
- Skylight rough openings and curb framing
- Egress window rough openings to code requirements
Header Sizing Matters
Undersized headers sag. Oversized headers waste lumber and add unnecessary load. The right header depends on the span, what's above it (bearing wall vs. non-bearing), and your local code. We've been sizing headers for residential openings across Oklahoma for 20+ years and we know the local requirements.
Working With Your Window Schedule
If you have a window schedule from your manufacturer or supplier, we work directly from it. If you don't have one yet, we'll rough in openings to standard clearances and note where adjustments may be needed. Either way, we communicate clearly with the project manager or GC so there are no surprises at window installation time.
Window Replacement Framing
Replacing existing windows sometimes requires modifying or reinforcing the existing rough opening. We handle rough opening modifications on remodel and window replacement projects throughout our service area — correctly resizing, re-heading, and reinforcing the framing so the new window installs properly and seals permanently.
